Top 10 things to know about citing NIH grants, like the CTSA grant

With the announcement in April that CTSI had received more than $42.6 million over five years in renewed National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding through the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences’ Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) program, this is a perfect time to share the top 10 things to know about NIH grant citations and related federal policy compliance requirements.

  1. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) requires all federally funded research to include an acknowledgement of NIH award support and a disclaimer. Therefore, the University of Minnesota Clinical and Translational Science Institute is required to ensure an acknowledgement of the CTSA grant is included in any publication, press release, or poster that result from CTSI assistance or support.

    Example:
“This research was supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, grant UL1TR002494. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences.”

  2. CTSI assistance or support is not limited to monetary support via pilot grant funding. It could also mean: research career development education and training, users of CTSI service lines across its five cores and various programs and functions, or users of CTSI-developed and/or supported enterprise-wide tools such as REDCapOnCore, and StudyFinder, among others.

  3. The new CTSA grant is actually three awards linked together, please cite the CTSI grant numbers applicable to you:

For grantees, Scholars outside of the KL2 and TL1 programs, service line and/or tool users:
“This research was supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, grant UL1TR002494. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences.”

For mentored career development KL2 Scholars:
“This research was supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, grants KL2TR002492 and UL1TR002494. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences.”

    For new NRSA TL1 trainees:
“This research was supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, grants TL1R002493 and UL1TR002494. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences.”

  4. Since our initial award in 2011, more than 630 publications have cited CTSI’s CTSA grant and have been included in progress reports to the NIH. Citing the grant is a way to show the value and impact of the CTSA program on the University of Minnesota and our community and other NIH funding.

  5. Additionally, NIH requires that publications that arise from NIH-funded research be compliant with the mandatory Public Access Policy, including obtaining a PMCID and having the full article made available to the public on PubMed Central. CTSI staff are available to assist you with each step of this process and Bio-Medical Library staff can assist you with questions related to compliance.
