Clemen Wilcox: Listening to Minnesota, one story at a time
Clemen Wilcox spends a lot of time talking with people.
As research engagement director for the 10,000 Families Study at the University of Minnesota, Clemen helps ensure that participants stay informed, engaged, and connected to the research they make possible. The 10,000 Families Study follows Minnesotans over many years to better understand how lifestyle, genetics, and environment impact health.
Clemen's job is to engage families from Minnesota representing different communities, zip codes, and perspectives.
People Want to Know More
Because participants are asked to stay involved in the study for several years, Clemen and her team work hard to keep them informed about how their contributions are advancing research. From her time at community events and talking to potential participants, Clemen knows that people are curious about the research being done.
“They say, we want to know! We want to know what’s happening. Thank you for helping us understand that,” Clemen said.
In response, the study team created a participant newsletter, hosts webinars, and offers events that share study updates and findings.
What it takes to reach all of Minnesota
Over the years, participant perspectives have also shaped how 10,000 Families engage with Minnesotans. From the massive Minnesota State Fair to the community-driven Blue Earth County Fair, Clemen knows that if you want to reach all Minnesotans you have to go to them and learn what they care about.
“Every community needs something different,” Clemen said.
Clemen hopes that everyone knows there is a place for them in research. She believes that every participant contributes valuable knowledge that can help improve health and make a difference for future generations.
