For 14 months, Amanda struggled with C. difficile, a bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the colon. After exhausting traditional treatment options, she joined her first research study. Reflecting on her decision, Amanda said, “I wasn’t responding to traditional treatments, so why not try something new and innovative? I also wanted to advance science and be part of it.”

She received a fecal microbiota transplant at the University of Minnesota — a treatment that ultimately cured her. Inspired by the experience, Amanda went on to join the University’s Microbiota Therapeutics team, the same group that had facilitated her transplant.
