J. Michael Oakes, PhD

Dr. Michael Oakes is the Associate Vice President for Research with the University of Minnesota's Office of the Vice President for Research, is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health at the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health, and is the Director for the Interdisciplinary Research Leaders Program. Oakes has previously directed the Graduate Program in Epidemiology, served as a long-time member and leader of the University of Minnesota's Institutional Review Board (IRB) and served the Faculty Senate in various roles. He has expertise in research methods, social epidemiology, research ethics, and research leadership. Oakes' research focuses on the social determinants of health and he has been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on several long-term grants from the National Institutes of Health.
