Clinical trials depend on people. Researchers, clinicians, study teams, participants, and families all play an important role in answering questions that help improve health and healthcare. Each year on May 20, Clinical Trials Day recognizes the many individuals who make research possible. The observance commemorates the day in 1747 when James Lind, a surgeon in the British Royal Navy, began what is widely considered one of the first clinical trials while studying treatments for scurvy.
Clinical Trials Day also highlights the importance of trust, communication, and public understanding in research. For many people, learning about clinical trials can be a new experience. Sharing accessible, real-world stories can help people better understand how research works, why participation matters, and the impact research can have on individuals, families, and communities.
